Opportunities From: Roger Williams Park Botanical Center

Get trained on how to work in the Flavor Lab or PDG independently or alongside other volunteers. We will go over standard procedures, tools, watering, pruning, and general best practices for gardening and interacting with the public.

For Rose Maze volunteers who come in at 10:00am before the Botanical Center opens to the public.

Volunteer Tasks:

"Prune roses after last frost; garden clean-up; tie loose branches where possible. Check that sprinkler heads are visible (free up the heads that may have become buried over the winter months. Deadhead roses as needed and weed garden each shift."

Roger Williams Park Japanese Garden maintenance includes tree pruning, shrub trimming, general cleanup, as well as occasional planting and watering.

During this time, prospective volunteers will learn goat care basics, become familiar with the Botanical Center Grounds and the goats' daily routines.

Volunteer/s will weed the indoor bog of ferns, oxalis, or any other of the common weeds. Remember to use the stepping stones if you feel comfortable stepping into the bog to focus on the interior area.

Please grab a small bucket and some gloves (if you'd like) from the volunteer cabinet.

We need a volunteer to help prune some of the dead plant material in the outdoor carnivorous plant bog. Please grab snips and a bucket, to put material in, from the volunteer cabinet. 

Remember to use the steppingstones and do not step onto the soil directly as this leads to compaction.

This is a flexible shift, meaning it can happen at any point, just make sure to sign up and note when you will be present.

Training sessions to get started volunteering with the perennial garden crew on Mondays or Tuesdays.

Breakfast time at the barn!

Chores include:

Feel free to brush them if you have time and, if you are comfortable, engage with park guests to introduce them to the goats and their role at the BC.  

This shift may run longer (until 4pm) if you want to spend more time with the goats and our visitors. Chores include: Mucking the barn; refilling hay as needed; feeding dinner; refreshing hot water; taking the goats out for a grazing walk.

Those who sign up for this shift will primarily hang out with the goats--either in the barn or in the Capricorn Lounge--and interact with our guests. You'll keep the goats company while educating visitors about the goats' role in our approach to sustainable landscaping. This shift and the 10am to 11:30a shift are most appropriate for volunteers who want to work with the goats but are not quite comfortable walking them, especially by themselves.
